DPP-Assignment Two; Feedback

Feedback on the assignment

Elements to consider with your assignments:
This assignment is concerned with the quality of the image that you take and the amount of control that you take in the planning of each shot. Images should be in keeping with the theme of the assignment, and should show your consideration of the effects of light on your subject along with your level of understanding over the outcome of the picture.

Your assignment in connection with the above points

Street Scenes

The three images taken here start to build up a picture of the area that you have selected and I really like the way you have created a sub-theme within your assignment. The narrow street has a particularly low light level despite our knowledge that this is a ‘blue sky day’. The wider street has more available light and reveals an expanse of isolation. The bicycle helps to draw us in to this very point, giving an indication of local abandonment. You have struggled technically with the last of the three, due to the extreme contrast of light visible in the frame. You have selected this viewpoint to include a small reflection in the puddle in the foreground. This is somewhat incidental as the eye is drawn through the diagonal lines of the frame. You point out that the sky is perfect here, but the rest of the picture hasn’t worked. You might want to give some consider to your metering in this situation. Which part of the frame was most important to you? Could you have metered differently to emphasize this point?

Backlit

The backlit images, in contrast, do show us a much more positive view of the area. You have worked hard in the first of the three shots to overcome lighting difficulties and achieve a good result. I can see why you are pleased with this. Did the remaining images challenge you as much? Perhaps you could have explored backlighting a little more, concluding on the way that you can use this technique to influence the outcome of your picture.

Reflective Scenes

You have worked really hard with reflective light in each of the shots to show good detail in the required area. The first of the three images is particularly effective. You have started to build up a picture of the surroundings with the inclusion of an element of mystery. I would have loved to see you carry on and produce a couple more images in the same space, gradually revealing the identity and function of the space.

Dappled Light

Dappled light can be really effective in out of doors photography, particularly when you are contrasting deep pools of light with rich, dark areas of shadow. Although two of these images reveal the scene exactly as you saw it, how effective do you feel the results have been? Could you have used your camera techniques to create a stronger impact? Of the three shots the middle one seems the most interesting. In this picture you have demonstrated a high contrast between light and dark areas across the frame and I am sure that you are really pleased with the result.

Summary/ Pointers for the next assignment
Although you have indicated a lack of confidence with this task you have worked really hard here to come to terms with the complexities of capturing light. I feel sure that the efforts that you have put into this will make a big difference to your future results. One or two of the images that you have produced here are particularly exciting, requiring the viewer to look deeply at what is in front of them and encouraging levels if thought on the content. Being able to add this level of interest to your shots will be a big advantage to you in future modules.
