Elements to consider with your assignments:
The emphasis with this assignment is the communication of an idea over a period of time. Your understanding and enthusiasm for the task are obviously essential factors in your progression photographically.
Following
on from the previous exercises, we need to think very carefully about the
relationships between the images and your initial intentions in respect of
conveying a theme. This assignment has given you a lot of scope to be creative
and original, and to use the skills that you have acquired on previous lessons.
Your assignment in
connection with the above points
You’ve
worked with a theme of kitchen utensils for this assignment, working with macro
photography to show detail and attempting to show small objects in bigger than
life proportions. It would be nice to give the work a nice strong linking title
here so that the audience starts to get a feel for this as a theme of work,
rather than just a collection of kitchen objects. Could you research this a
little further? For example, perhaps you could find out what various cooks say
about their utensils etc – or perhaps you have a more personal reason for
displaying these objects at ‘larger than life’?
The
collection of images that you have presented, work well together as a set and
you have worked very successfully with a range of different techniques to
achieve your results. I particularly like the black and white images which have
a contemporary feel to them and also a feeling of sterility which seems in
keeping for kitchen utensils. It might be nice to concentrate on these high-key
black and whites to give a stronger thematic feel to your work. The shallow
depth of field, shiny surfaces and slight obscurity to the subject matter sit
more comfortably together than the brightly coloured examples of cocktail
umbrellas etc. Also –I am not so sure about bag clips as kitchen utensils.
This collection works well as a demonstration of skills that you have accomplished over the course. I would like to see you add a little more reasoning to your choices of technique on each occasion and a little more personal thought about what these items mean to you.
Learning Logs
I
would like to see examples of practitioner images on your website and relevant
annotation of particular images. You could have included photographers who have
similarly photographed kitchen utensils for instance, for inspiration and
technical ideas. Although you do not have long now before the assessment takes
place, I would like you to continue to build on your blog and to show evidence
(examples) of the research that you have been doing.
